  • 1 pound ground beef lean or regular, based on preference
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce low-sodium recommended
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil adds a nutty aroma
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger grated or minced (optional)
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 stalks green onions chopped for garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (gochugaru) optional, for heat
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil neutral oil like vegetable or canola

Optional Additions

  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots adds sweetness and crunch
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms diced, enhances umami flavor

Instructions
 

  • In a mixing bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, red pepper flakes (if using), garlic, and ginger. Stir well until the sugar dissolves.
  • Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat and add cooking oil.
  • Add the ground beef and cook for 5-7 minutes, breaking it up into small crumbles, until browned.
  • Drain excess fat if needed, then reduce heat to medium and pour in the prepared marinade.
  • Stir to coat the beef evenly and let simmer for 3-5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  • Add chopped onion and optional ingredients like carrots or mushrooms. Cook for another 3-4 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.
  • Serve hot over rice or in lettuce wraps with kimchi on the side.

Notes

For extra flavor, let the beef sit in the marinade for 15-20 minutes before cooking. Adjust sweetness and spice levels to taste.
